Sugar cane is usually grown in topical areas because they need lots of sun and water. It takes about 12 months for sugar cane to fully grow, but sugar cane can regrow two or three times a year. Usually, when it comes to harvesting, wealthier countries use machines to harvest the sugar cane, but poor countries do it by hand.

When the sugar comes to a factory, machines are used to crush it and form a juice. The machines have large, heavy rollers which are able to crush the sugar cane. The sugar cane juice will be stored for processing. The original sugar cane juice is dirty, so the factories usually use machines to clear the water of any excess waste. After this process, the sugar cane juice is thickened into a syrup by evaporation. In the final stage of the production of sugar, the sugar syrup is boiled even more until enough water has been evaporated to allow the syrup to turn to tiny crystals. To dry the sugar crystals, the sugar is put through a heated granulator. Once they are dry, the sugars are sorted by size using vibrators. Nutella is about 55% sugar.
