What Should We Do?

To reduce the entire eco-footprint of the Nutella product, I have come up with an action plan which I think will help reduce the ecological impact of this product. After reading and researching about this product, I have found things about this product that I think can be changed. First of all, the factories of the product are scattered around Europe and America, though Nutella is bought by 21 other countries around the world. That means that to ship the product to those other countries will mean lots of transportation. Lots of transportation will lead to lots of pollution. I thought that if there were more production facilities closer to these places, it would require less transportation, therefore less pollution would be produced. I have also thought that if the factories ran on renewable resources rather than non-renewable resources, less pollution would be made. Examples of types of energy that could be used are: geothermal, solar, wind, hydro, and biofuels.

When the product is sent to other countries, Nutella jars are transported by plane, truck, and train. Planes are the most harmful type of transportation existing because they usually run far distances and require so much fuel. The fuel is non-renewable, and the planes let out all this fuel once it is burned and used. Trucks obviously have a big impact on the earth as well. Trains are the least harmful type of transportation, so I figured, because of all the existing railroad tracks, it would be better if Nutella delivered all the jars by train. When shipping the product, the product is put into recycled Australian containers. To make this even more eco-friendly, the product should be put into smaller containers. This will reduce the amount of space taken up by the product. The Nutella jars can also be made smaller to reduce waste. If the jars were made smaller, they would not need to use as much materials, reducing the amount of waste produced by this product.

To reduce the amount of waste of this product, Nutella should find a way to make the product last longer. Nutella can already last about a year in a pantry, but if we can increase that time, even less waste would be produced.

The machines that are used in the process of Nutella use up a lot of energy, which creates even more pollution. To reduce the amount of pollution created, the process should be changed to use ass little machines as possible, so less pollution will be made. There are steps in the Nutella process that can be changed to make it more eco-friendly. For example, to use less trucks and planes, instead of shipping the Nutella jars from the warehouse, people who live in New Jersey can go to the warehouse to buy the Nutella, and for the other places farther away, there could be more warehouses around the globe to allow less transportation pollution to be created.
